Four "creatures" made with Pontiki.

Pontiki (ポンチキ, Ponchiki^?) (mouse) is a construction toy for building models of unusual creatures (which are also referred to as pontiki). Pontiki are constructed from colourful plastic components of two different types: a hollow shape dotted with holes, for representing the creatures' bodies, and smaller parts which fit into the holes, for representing features such as eyes and limbs.

The body parts come in four standard shapes, a cube, a cylinder, a cone and an egg. They can be divided into sections and combined with the body parts of other pontiki. In addition to the standard pontiki, there is a pontiki with a pull-back car for a body, called Chovica, and a six-legged moving pontiki, called Pootiki.

Pontikis may also have three kinds of rare mini pontikis called parasites. One the most common a Papara, a testicle like mini pontiki (mini-mouse). The others a human like mini pontiki called Eric and the rarest another one armed human like mini pontiki called Tabcuo.

Backstory Into the Present
Shin Megami Tensei Online has gone through a rather tumultuous development period. As the first Megaten title in MMORPGs form, there was a certain amount of anxiety attached to it. Early news on the title was scarce. It was believed that the game somehow grew out of the original online plans for Shin Megami Tensei Nine (a Japanese Xbox exclusive title) that were later dropped. Whether or not this was true, the game initially creeped up for the PC quite a while back in 2004.

At some point in this stage of development, the game was in some sort of playable form. Screens crept out and it made an appearance at at least one Japanese trade show. Even a video card was released with SMT Online related imagery emblazoned on its packaging. Early buzz for the game, however, really felt like anything but positive. The small amount of screen shots most people would see were not impressive, appearing largely barren and generic. Information on a closed beta test for this version of the title was extremely scarce, but apparently ended on January 30th, 2005 according to RPGFan (via Game Watch). As time went on, news on the title seemed to die off completely.

Many months later, on July 13, 2005, the game was given new life. It was revealed that Japanese developer, Cave, would be forming a new subsidiary. This new company would be known as Cave Online Entertainment. This new company's president was to be existing Cave president Keiichi Takano, while former Atlus director Hideo Yoyokama was to serve as vice president. The company came into existance days later on July 15th.

Cave Online Entertainment announced that it would be working on three titles, one of which would be Shin Megami Tensei Online: Imagine. Yoyokama would be acting as director of the project and the team itself was made up of many former Atlus employees. It seemed the game was back to life, but what was being kept from the initial phases of the project was anyone's guess. Was it scrapped? Were certain components being kept around? Was what was in the works just an evolution of the previous code?

As time went on, small bits and pieces came out about the title. Cave put up a short Flash video on their website that showed off concept art for the title. MegatenOnline.com was registered, largely acting as a placeholder at the time. Eventually a Developer Journal was added to the site. It saw semi-frequent updates, many including concept art, photos of the development process and so forth.

On July 14th, 2006, Cave Online Entertainment issued a press release about the title. It stated a couple of interesting items about the game: First, it would be using network middleware from Community Engine (also known as CE-Labs), called VCE. Second, beta testing for the title would begin some time in the Winter of 2006.

Website Unveiling
On July 24th, 2006, Cave Online Entertainment opened up the official website for Shin Megami Tensei Online: Imagine. It unveiled the first details on the story of the game, the character creation process, demon fusions and so forth. A new batch of in-game screens from the latest version were also released (although one had been present on the Developer Journal for quite a while). They were a departure from previous screens released during 2004/2005, further pushing the point that this seemed to be a restart for the title.

Extremely Basic Story Information
Tokyo was destroyed in 202X (essentially sticking it between SMT and SMT II). The survivors, under the guidance of seven wisemen, begin the construction of a massive tower. This tower is to be known as Shinjuku Babel and will be massive in construction.

Other areas surrounding the tower include Nakano and Suginami. The game itself starts in an area known as "3rd Home", which appears to be near the tower itself.

General Gameplay Information
Shin Megami Tensei Online: Imagine retains a lot of the qualities more recent Megaten games are known for. Graphically, the game uses a texture style similar to Digital Devil Saga and SMT: Nocturne, giving it an almost animated feel that nicely replicates Kazuma Kaneko's artwork for the series. It also appears to use a glow/haze effect, similar to the one in place within Nocturne, although a bit more polished in execution.

Like most MMORPGs, players are required to create a player character, or avatar. Players choose between male or female forms. They are then allowed to alter the appearance of their character in a manner they deem fit, by trying out different face and hair combinations. Beyond this, as the character progresses, the player will happen upon more than 200 different kinds of clothes and accessories. In addition, the game contains a multitude of weapons, including blades, blunt melee weapons, spears and guns.

As far as demons are concerned, the player will be followed by their companions onscreen. The game retains demon conversations and demon fusions. Alignment characteristics also return, being divided up into "Law", "Chaos" and "Neutral". The site itself also mentions something known as the "Gene System", although I am not sure of what this involves just yet.

The battle system, unlike other titles in the series, but befitting of an online title, is completely in real time. Like many other games of its type, this largely involves activating icons that represent actions. This may include attacks, spells or item usage.

Beta Test and Release
Atlus's Beta Test for the title came and went. While it was obviously Japanese focused, it was possible for people to create accounts to test the title from anywhere in the world. There were small amounts of fans from outside the country that gave the limited Open Beta a try. This is likely where any English impressions of the title you have read will come from and what our Play Guide is based upon.

In 2007 the game released in stores for Windows XP and Vista in Japan. The game does not appear to have a monthly fee associated with it, but rather allows users to use real world money to purchase certain items in the game. This is a method that has been increasingly seen as a viable alternative to traditional monthly fees and we'll likely be seeing more of it elsewhere in the future. **Don't get too excited..Read below to see what I mean and there's a serious lack of fan-side confirmations so far, from what I've been foogling around and whatnot. But yeah it's relatively f2p atm- eq8all**

Its chances of hitting the rest of the world, unfortunately, are basically zero. It is unlikely Atlus, or really any company, will be willing to translate a title of this magnitude and handle its servers. In addition, in Japan the game itself appears to have gotten a rather lukewarm reception. Amazon user reviews for the title average 2 out of 5. It's unlikely (a better word is "impossible") that any company involved will find it to be a worthwhile endeavor.

The Tower of Druaga (ドルアーガの塔 Doruāga no Tō) is the name of an arcade game released by Namco in 1984 as well as an anime adaptation of the game (The Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk), which its production company Gonzo chose to make legally accessible through BOST TV, YouTube and Crunchyroll.

The game runs on Namco Super Pac-Man hardware but with a video system like that used in Mappy. It was later ported to the MSX, Famicom and remade for the PC Engine platform. Its first appearance outside Japan was in the third compilation of the Namco Museum series for the PlayStation and also appears on the Nintendo DS and Xbox 360 version of said series.

Semi final match 1 - Colin Kurin (Blue/Black Faerie Control) Vs Ben Chio ( Green/White Primal Control)
The first game was literally a bitter battle with Ben getting the winning dice roll and starting first. The first spell played was the card feared most by control players: Bitterblossom. Played early, the enchantment would produce an endless supply of faerie rogues that would bite and chew and sting their opponents to death. Ben succumbed early, his spells and early acceleration of mana unable to keep up with the damaged dealt by Colins fae. A spellstutter sprite stopping the primal command and a mistbind clique to drain all the mana during upkeep, and the first attack was all over.

Round 1 - Colin 1 - Ben 0

After sideboards, Ben packed in his wispmare and nodes and Colin brought in the thoughtseizes and slaughter packs. Here Ben made a fatal error: he didn't board in his vexing shushers to slow the counterspell that threatened to shut his game as Colin took out many creature removal cards to make way for the thoughtseizes. again it happened, turn 2 bitterblossom (fast becoming the best card in standard(35USD$) overtaking tarmogoyf(50USD$) in popularity), 3rd turn rune snag, 4 turn spellstutter and 5 turn thoughtseize into mistbind, completely overpowering Bens defenses and taking out the key card in the matchup: Cloudthresher. One scion of oona later for 14 damage, and the game was over.

Semifinal match 2 - Hanafi Light (mono white kithkins ) vs Lim !@#$^ (gay Blue/Black faeries)

On the opposite side of the table, Hanafi was in a good form vs the other faeries deck. His deck packed mainboard mana tithes and sunlance, which at 1 mana would prove to be very devastating early game. Packed with the best 2 drops and 1 casting cost creatures Magic had to offer, Lim would be hard pressed to defend early game, as bitterblossom would be a liability in the matchup due to the life loss ability and his initial deck setup, which was made to win the mirror match game and to fight control decks. This was a nightmare from the get-go.

Both games, Hanafi came out blazing with first turn stalwart and second turn knight of meadowgrain and 3rd turn wizened cenn. In a matter of few turns his army of thoughtwefted kithkins ran amok and burned the faery to the ground. (anyone want more tastes of sunlance?) First game quickly went to Hanafi, especially since Lim went down to 5 cards due to a bad mulligan. Second game came in the sideboarded rebuff the wicked and it was another torture for lim who drew land after land after land... while Hanafi went for the quick kill.

Hanafi Light wins 2-0

Finals Colin (U/B faeries) Vs Hanafi ( Mono white KithKins)

Things were not looking good for Colin. Hanafi had already dominated his previous matchup with the other faerie deck and was looking good with a super fast aggro deck looking to win the championship. On the other hand, Colin was running Japanese tech straight from Pro Tour Hollywood. Trusting in the deck that Kenji Tsumura designed, he played only 12 faeries in his deck, and a full complement of removal to bring down aggresive strategies...

Round 1. Hanafi won the dice roll and elected to start first. Strangely he kept a slow hand without any first turn plays but promised a lot of action in the later turns. Playing his land untapped, he said go. Colin played his land and suspended an ancestral visions, which would play havoc if he ever lived to see his spell come out of suspended animation 4 turns later. First blood came to hanafi with a knight of meadowgrain and kinght of holy nimbus (which although wasnt technically a kithkin, was very dangerous in the matchup)Staring at 4 damage a turn and down to 16 life, he made a dangerous play that might win him the game:bitterblossom. The enchantment would make him lose 1 life a turn, but helped him produce a faerie rogue which could play early defence. Hanafi continued the barrage of assaults with more kithkins to his side and attacking him down to 8 life.

And then the visions resolved. Colin drew 3 extra cards during his turn and his smile appeared. After that, every creature Hanafi played was killed. A terror here and a nameless inversion there and soon Hanafi had no more creatures on the board. That was when Colin played Mistbind Clique to eat his bitterblossom at 4 life and began the counterattack. Hanafi was sitting at a healthy 28 life but was looking a bit restless to the growing army of faeries that Colin was building while he was himself drawing more lands from his library, a bad sign. The Mistbind went the entire distance, swinging for 4 damage a turn all the way and taking the first game 1-0.

Round 2. Hanafi took out a few slow cards and sideboarded in the Rebuffs, a key card to stop all the pin-point removal that Colin had. Colin however predicted that would happen and decided to board out most of his top heavy cards like cryptic commands and put in the ever dangerous damnation and the creature killer Razormane Masticore. The masticore was another insane japanese tech, which was perfect for the aggro field, as it had first strike (sorry doran) and could shoot for 3 damage a turn.

Losing the first game meant Hanafi went first this time. Playing a perfect start with an early stalwart and a knight of meadowgrain and complemented with the protection pieces of mana tithes, rebuffs and sunlances meant that Colin was in deep, deep waters this time around. Colin also kept his starting hand which featured an early bitterblossom and a grip of devastating removal cards. Hanafi kept the pressure on with mindgames by attacking with his 2 kithkins and leaving mana open to respond to anything his opponent might play. Then the war began: Colin's Mistbind Clique was counter with the white force spike, and his razormane masticore was killed with 2 sunlances. Colin was on the ropes and had to play his removals targetting the ever dangerous knight of meadowgrain. A series of furious exchange of instants ensued: a terror on the kithkin was countered with a rebuff but was then responded with spellstutter to nulify the spell. However, Colin was tapped out again: a simple mana tithe on the stutter killed the defence on the spot. Hanafi almost heaved a sigh of relief when from out of nowhere Colin played his ace: Slaughter Pact. The killer spell allowed him to kill any nonblack creature without paying any mana, but he had to pay 2B on his next upkeep or lose the game. The knight was finally dealt with; the tide was changing.

And then the unthinkable happened: Hanafi was missing his land drops. He was playing on 2 lands the entire game while Colin was slowly building his position. His oblivion ring stayed quietly in his hand without the mana to cast. Colin quietly replayed another Razormane Masticore which began shooting away all the other kithkins from the battlefield. With the lands still not showing up for Hanafi, all he could do was watch with dismay as Colin's Masticore dominated the board and winning the game at 7 life.

Colin wins GPT Manila 2-0.
